The Ultimate Exam Preparation Strategy & Schedule for 2026 GCSE & A-Level Students

With GCSEs starting in May and A-Levels in May–June 2025, students now have approximately 6–10 weeks of preparation time. This guide gives you the exact revision framework our tutors use — the same approach behind our 92% A/A* results rate since 2009.

Why Most Students Revise Wrong

The biggest mistake students make is confusing re-reading notes with active revision. Reading your textbook for three hours feels productive but produces very little long-term retention. Research consistently shows that active retrieval — testing yourself, practising past paper questions, and explaining concepts aloud — is dramatically more effective.

At 6S Tutorials, we build every student's revision plan around active recall, spaced repetition and timed practice. Here is exactly how to do it.

Phase 1: The Audit (Week 1–2)

Before you revise anything, you need to know exactly where your marks are being lost. Do not skip this step — it saves enormous amounts of time later.

  • Sit a timed past paper for each subject under exam conditions. Use the real mark scheme immediately after.
  • Create a topic weakness list. Categorise every question you lost marks on into: A (I know this well), B (shaky), C (I don't understand this at all).
  • Prioritise C topics first — these have the highest yield. Do not spend revision time polishing topics you already know.

This audit typically takes 2–3 days but will make the next 6 weeks exponentially more efficient.

Phase 2: The 6S Structured Revision Block System

We recommend building your revision around 90-minute focused blocks with clear topic targets. Each block should follow this sequence:

  1. Active note review (15 mins): Read your condensed notes or a 6S topic sheet. Do not just skim — annotate and question.
  2. Self-testing (25 mins): Close all notes. Write down everything you can recall. Use flashcards, mind maps, or past exam sub-questions.
  3. Exam question practice (35 mins): Complete 1–2 timed exam questions on the topic. Mark them immediately using the mark scheme.
  4. Error review (15 mins): For every mark lost, write one sentence explaining why. This is the most important step.

6S Tip: Students who review their errors in writing retain corrections 3–4× better than students who simply look at the mark scheme. The act of writing the correction cements it.

Phase 3: A Realistic Weekly Schedule

Here is a sample weekly schedule for an A-Level student taking Maths, Biology and Chemistry — adjust proportionally for your subjects and the number of weeks remaining.

Day Morning (2hrs) Afternoon (2hrs) Evening (1hr)
MondayMaths — Pure topicsBiology — Cell biologyFlashcard review all subjects
TuesdayChemistry — OrganicMaths — StatisticsPast paper Q&A review
WednesdayBiology — GeneticsChemistry — PhysicalError log update
ThursdayMaths — MechanicsBiology — PhysiologyFlashcard review
FridayChemistry — InorganicMaths — full past paperRest — active recovery
SaturdayBiology — full past paperChemistry — full past paperError log review
SundayLight review — condensed notes only. No new learning.Prepare next week plan

Phase 4: The 2-Week Final Sprint

In the two weeks immediately before your first exam, shift your focus entirely to full timed past papers and mark scheme analysis. No new topics — only consolidation and exam technique.

  • Sit at least 3 full timed papers per subject in the final two weeks.
  • Practise in real exam conditions — no phone, no music, strict timing.
  • After each paper, spend equal time on the mark scheme review as you did sitting the paper.
  • Focus particularly on extended response and essay questions — these are where the most marks are dropped in the final exam.

The single biggest differentiator between A and A* students is not intelligence — it is the number of past papers completed under timed conditions. Students who sit 10+ papers per subject consistently outperform those who only sit 3–4.

GCSE Students: Your Additional Tips

GCSE students face a unique challenge: up to 10–12 subjects simultaneously. The key is prioritisation. Identify your 3 weakest subjects and allocate 60% of your revision time to those. Do not spend equal time on all subjects — the marginal gains from improving a weak subject are far greater than polishing a strong one.

For GCSE Maths and Science specifically, topic-by-topic question banks are invaluable. Our downloadable resources in the Downloads section cover the most high-frequency exam topics — from algebra and geometry to required practicals in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

A Proven Approach: What 6S Students Do Differently

Students who attend 6S Tutorials mini-group sessions alongside their independent revision consistently achieve stronger results. Our tutors do not simply re-teach the curriculum — we work specifically on exam technique, common examiner traps, and the exact vocabulary mark schemes reward.

Our 2026 exam timetable support sessions are now open for GCSE and A-Level students. If you have not yet booked your free trial lesson, now is the right time — spaces fill quickly in the March–April period before exams.

From Beauchamp to Imperial College, Queen Elizabeth to LSE — here are just a few of the many 6S success stories.

Ahmed — Beauchamp College Leicester

I have been to several tutors and returned unsatisfied and even more confused and disinterested in Maths and Science. Finally, one of our relatives recommended Mr Kapoor. I am truly thankful for his help throughout those 7 months for my GCSE preparations. I achieved a B in both and I am very satisfied with it, given Maths and Science are not my favourite subjects. He gave us a Question Bank and several tests but I was amazed to see a lot many questions appeared in the Science and Maths exam from those practice tests and Question Bank. I would want him to help me for my A-Levels now. Thank you very much Mr Kapoor.

Baljinder Singh — Beauchamp College Leicester

I was recommended by my friends who were studying with you from GCSE. I joined 6S Tutorials in 2010 for my A-Level exams and crash course. At first I was not sure if group tuition was for me. I took the free trial lesson in Mr Kapoor's group and I think he is the best teacher. He simplified the most complex topics in chemistry (entropy) and physics, which I never could understand. I received A in both. From January I started tuition in Maths also for my C3 and C4. The homework given was very exhausting but all the hard-work and shouting by sir paid off — I secured a place at Imperial College with A*A*A. Words are not enough to thank sir for my 6S. A million thanks sir.

Alap Gill — Beauchamp College Leicester

We would like to share with you that Alap got A* A A in Maths, Biology and Chemistry. She has got admission at UCL. We made sure to register and reserve a place for her with 6S Tutorials well in advance, given that we could not get admission during her GCSEs. Alap was very proud to be studying at 6S Tutorials.

Aadil R — Queen Elizabeth Leicester

I gained 3 A*s in Maths, Chemistry and Biology. Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it. I got an offer from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. I could not have done it without the help that you gave me. I always looked forward to your lessons and how can I forget the sarcasm during the lessons! Thank you so very much for helping me throughout my A-levels.

Shivani Goswany — Beauchamp College Leicester

Thank you so much for all your help in my A-levels. I achieved ABB — an A in Biology, B in Chemistry and B in Physics. I really felt that without your guidance and support, it would have been impossible. Thank you for all the extra sessions and the Question Bank which was invaluable. I am going to Leicester University to study Biomedical Sciences and I am really excited. Thank you once again.

Shivem Sardana — Queen Elizabeth Leicester

I achieved AAB in my A-levels — A in Maths, A in Chemistry and B in Biology. I am going to study Medicine at Leicester University. The lessons were always engaging and well structured. The Question Bank was an excellent resource and really helped me prepare for my exams. Thank you Mr Kapoor.

Kanika Josal — Queen Elizabeth Leicester

We are delighted to inform that Kanika has received her offer for a place at London School of Economics. Your support and constant encouragement has paid off. She could not have done it without your support. No wonder Kanika was adamant in her initial days to join 6S Tutorials, inspite the long waiting list. We trust that our younger son enrolled with you will be able to achieve equally good grades. Regards and best wishes.

Zakaria L — Queen Elizabeth Leicester

We were informed about your company by our neighbours. Their daughters attended your tutorial lessons last year. We were also informed that getting admission with yourself would be difficult. We were pleased that Zakaria got admission the same week. He is very happy with all of his lessons. He has been predicted AAA. We would like to extend our gratitude for all your services so far and will make sure that our daughter also registers after the half-term break.

Rajiv Patel — Beauchamp College Leicester

I am extremely gratified to you for helping my son achieve top results. We are proud of Rajiv's performance and he could not have done it without your support. He started his A-Level tuition with 6S Tutorials after hearing a lot about you from my nephew and niece. At the time, we already had a tutor coming to our place. But Rajiv found your style of teaching a lot more effective. He achieved three As and a B for his AS-Level. All thanks to you.

Munir Allam — Beauchamp College Leicester

Thank you for your kind help with Munir. He achieved AAA and is planning to take a gap year to improve his UKCAT score and get some work experience. Munir was very disappointed when he could not get a space in your UCAT course — we should have registered early. But overall it was a wonderful experience and Munir and his friends all enjoyed and always looked forward to your lessons. They all have done very well. Thank you very much.

Kailas Nath — Queen Elizabeth Leicester

I cannot thank you enough for all the help you offered me and my brother in the last 3 years. I finally got into my first choice Uni — Warwick. I could not have done it without your help. I achieved A*, A*, A in Maths, Chemistry and Biology. Thank you so much for the help not only in my subjects but also helping me decide the career path. I will be visiting you before I start my University in September.

Gina Trivedi — Queen Elizabeth Leicester

An infinite amount of gratitude for imparting knowledge in such an effortless and interesting way. I achieved A*AB in Maths, Biology and Chemistry. I have secured a place at Imperial College London to study Medicine. I could not have done it without your constant support and encouragement. The Question Bank was incredibly useful and the lessons were always engaging. Thank you so much Mr Kapoor.

Nafeez Ahmed — Private Candidate Leicester

Thank you 6S Tutorials for everything and for the great lessons in the 7 months. I managed to push my grades up to an A in Maths. Thank you again. And got into Aston. I will make sure I remember all your advice in future.

Abhiri Maushiq — Regent College Leicester

Got my UKCAT score 700. Now fingers crossed hoping it is good enough for next year to get into Queen Mary. Your help was highly appreciated — could not have done it without it. When do the A2 lessons start?

Nitesh Patel — City of Leicester College

Mr Kapoor gave us all the strategies and the much needed boost in confidence for Physics. I could have never achieved an A without his help. The Question Bank was of enormous help. Most of the questions you gave us in the class the nights before the exam — 70 per cent came up. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Also sir, please accommodate my sister for her A-Levels — she has been on the waiting list for 6 weeks now.

Neha Chand — Queen Elizabeth Leicester

I started tuition with 6S Tutorials from Year 10 onwards right till A-level. Thank you so much for guiding us throughout the years. I learnt more in those 90 minutes than the whole week at college. All my friends and myself are extremely thankful to you. I achieved ABB at A-level. I am at Loughborough University now. Thank you Mr Kapoor.

Harsha Udeshi — Beauchamp College Leicester

Thank you so much for all your help. I achieved A*AA in my A-levels in Maths, Chemistry and Biology and I am going to study Medicine. Your lessons were always engaging and well structured and I always felt well prepared for my exams. The Question Bank was an invaluable resource. Thank you Mr Kapoor.

Bhavna Desai — Gateway College Leicester

Rajesh got accepted into his first choice university. I would give all the credit to Mr Kapoor for his tireless help throughout the two years right from GCSE through to A-Levels. He has worked very closely with Rajesh, who used to always struggle in Science but surprisingly has now enrolled himself for a Science degree at Durham! We would like to genuinely thank Mr Kapoor for all his efforts.

Ellie Carter — Countesthrope Community College

Just like to thank 6S Tutorials for helping me through my A-Levels this year. I got the grades I needed and I am off to university. Would definitely recommend to anyone — the lessons were always engaging and the support was fantastic throughout.

Harsh Sandhu — Beauchamp College Leicester

My son was already attending tuition classes at another tutorial for his GCSEs but we were not pleased with the results. We wanted someone with a definite proof of success rate. We had heard a lot about 6S Tutorials through relatives but we were not sure about group tuition. After the trial lessons my son was extremely excited about how interesting and interactive the lessons were — better than his college and other tutors we had before. Surj received his results and he is very delighted — AAB, given that many found the biology exam very hard. Thank you so much for your help in the last 9 months for his AS-level.

Rohan Grewal — GAP Year Student

I registered with 6S during my gap year to try to improve my grades for Medicine. Mr Kapoor was extremely helpful and encouraging throughout. I achieved the grades I needed and I am now studying Medicine. The lessons were always well structured and I always felt well prepared for my exams. Thank you Mr Kapoor.

Vijay Kansal — Gateway College Leicester

I am extremely grateful to you Mr Kapoor for helping my son realise his potential. You were right 2 years ago that he would change his mind and he did what you told him to. He was overwhelmed with his grades AAA and you were the first person whom he called. We are all glad that he has finally been accepted at Nottingham University. A big thank you to you for all your support.

Gemma and Paul Henson — Manor High School Leicester

Many thanks to 6S Tutorials for helping our two daughters — Becky and Rachel — in Maths and Science during their Year 7 and 8. We are very pleased with their results. Even the teachers have observed a marked improvement in their performance. Thank you once again for taking care of them. It could not have been possible without you, specially given our work schedule.

Vipinder Thethi — Beauchamp College Leicester

I would like to say a big thank you for all the help you have provided our son Balraj Thethi. I am very pleased to say he achieved A* in Chemistry and A in Biology and Maths at A-Level. He would not have been able to achieve these grades without the help and support from 6S Tutorials. The teaching was outstanding throughout — both challenging and encouraging at the same time. We are thinking about using your services for our younger son and will be definitely using you in the future for Balraj's A-levels. Kind regards and once again thank you for all the support you have provided.
