Exam Strategy
The Ultimate Exam Preparation Strategy & Schedule for 2026 GCSE & A-Level Students
By the 6S Tutorials Team · Published March 2026 · 8 min read · Leicester, UK
With GCSEs starting in May and A-Levels in May–June 2025, students now have approximately 6–10 weeks of preparation time. This guide gives you the exact revision framework our tutors use — the same approach behind our 92% A/A* results rate since 2009.
Why Most Students Revise Wrong
The biggest mistake students make is confusing re-reading notes with active revision. Reading your textbook for three hours feels productive but produces very little long-term retention. Research consistently shows that active retrieval — testing yourself, practising past paper questions, and explaining concepts aloud — is dramatically more effective.
At 6S Tutorials, we build every student's revision plan around active recall, spaced repetition and timed practice. Here is exactly how to do it.
Phase 1: The Audit (Week 1–2)
Before you revise anything, you need to know exactly where your marks are being lost. Do not skip this step — it saves enormous amounts of time later.
Sit a timed past paper for each subject under exam conditions. Use the real mark scheme immediately after.
Create a topic weakness list. Categorise every question you lost marks on into: A (I know this well), B (shaky), C (I don't understand this at all).
Prioritise C topics first — these have the highest yield. Do not spend revision time polishing topics you already know.
This audit typically takes 2–3 days but will make the next 6 weeks exponentially more efficient.
Phase 2: The 6S Structured Revision Block System
We recommend building your revision around 90-minute focused blocks with clear topic targets. Each block should follow this sequence:
Active note review (15 mins): Read your condensed notes or a 6S topic sheet. Do not just skim — annotate and question.
Self-testing (25 mins): Close all notes. Write down everything you can recall. Use flashcards, mind maps, or past exam sub-questions.
Exam question practice (35 mins): Complete 1–2 timed exam questions on the topic. Mark them immediately using the mark scheme.
Error review (15 mins): For every mark lost, write one sentence explaining why. This is the most important step.
6S Tip: Students who review their errors in writing retain corrections 3–4× better than students who simply look at the mark scheme. The act of writing the correction cements it.
Phase 3: A Realistic Weekly Schedule
Here is a sample weekly schedule for an A-Level student taking Maths, Biology and Chemistry — adjust proportionally for your subjects and the number of weeks remaining.
Day
Morning (2hrs)
Afternoon (2hrs)
Evening (1hr)
Monday
Maths — Pure topics
Biology — Cell biology
Flashcard review all subjects
Tuesday
Chemistry — Organic
Maths — Statistics
Past paper Q&A review
Wednesday
Biology — Genetics
Chemistry — Physical

Thursday

Biology — Physiology

Friday
Chemistry — Inorganic
Maths — full past paper
Rest — active recovery
Saturday
Biology — full past paper
Chemistry — full past paper

Prepare next week plan
Phase 4: The 2-Week Final Sprint
In the two weeks immediately before your first exam, shift your focus entirely to full timed past papers and mark scheme analysis. No new topics — only consolidation and exam technique.
Sit at least 3 full timed papers per subject in the final two weeks.
Practise in real exam conditions — no phone, no music, strict timing.
After each paper, spend equal time on the mark scheme review as you did sitting the paper.
Focus particularly on extended response and essay questions — these are where the most marks are dropped in the final exam.
The single biggest differentiator between A and A* students is not intelligence — it is the number of past papers completed under timed conditions. Students who sit 10+ papers per subject consistently outperform those who only sit 3–4.
GCSE Students: Your Additional Tips
GCSE students face a unique challenge: up to 10–12 subjects simultaneously. The key is prioritisation. Identify your 3 weakest subjects and allocate 60% of your revision time to those. Do not spend equal time on all subjects — the marginal gains from improving a weak subject are far greater than polishing a strong one.
For GCSE Maths and Science specifically, topic-by-topic question banks are invaluable. Our downloadable resources in the Downloads section cover the most high-frequency exam topics — from algebra and geometry to required practicals in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
A Proven Approach: What 6S Students Do Differently
Students who attend 6S Tutorials mini-group sessions alongside their independent revision consistently achieve stronger results. Our tutors do not simply re-teach the curriculum — we work specifically on exam technique, common examiner traps, and the exact vocabulary mark schemes reward.
Our 2026 exam timetable support sessions are now open for GCSE and A-Level students. If you have not yet booked your free trial lesson, now is the right time — spaces fill quickly in the March–April period before exams.
